Manjeet Shergill

About

Shergill is a Singaporean artist and one of the first to graduate from La-Salle College of the Arts. Without artists like her, the contemporary art scene in Singapore may have taken longer to get off the ground.

The works shown here are from a number of earlier collections, all painted prior to the birth of her son 7 years ago and her break from professional painting.

The works have a simplicity of composition that is the sign of an accomplished composer. The clean lines used in the depiction of the subject matter demonstrate her love for Modigliani. They suggest calmness and an ordered mind. However, Shergill's use of colour spills strong emotions across the canvas and it is with colour that the therapeutic side of her painting comes across.

After her break from professional painting, 2010 sees her starting work on a new collection of pieces that will describe where she has been over the last 7 years.

It will be fascinating to see how her use of colour has changed, if at all.
